Every summer, Innovation Youth gets busy in its downtown neighbourhood! This summer is no different. Our festival, Neighbourhood on the Move, will enter its 6th year on Pierce street, running from July 13th to August 1st. Peter-McGill is a very urban area, with loads of residents and families, and not too many gathering spaces, and even fewer parks. Neighbourhood on the Move tries to be part of the solution, by closing down our street and turning it into a temporary community space, with picnic tables, giant chess, daily children’s workshops and concerts for the whole family. Come and check it out- it’s a wonderful event, full of arts and community oriented activities.
For the third year running, Innovation Youth’s gardens will be in full bloom, with a team of young interns from the centre who will learn about urban agriculture and growing food in an urban environment. We have 5 garden plots across downtown this year. Gardening in a city can be an adventure (cleaning up the plots of beer cans, garbage…) but the harvest is always plentiful, and the kids learn a lot- they gain enough job experience to help them get future employment.
One of our plots will be on Pierce street in the form of large raised planters. We’ve been working on this project for a long time, and this summer, it will finally come to fruition. Inspired by the Incredible Edible movement, 4 planters will contain vegetables and herbs available for public consumption. It will also help our street look greener and prettier during the hot summer months.
We hope you can swing by Pierce street for all these exciting events during the summer!
